My name is Garrett and I have Short Domain Trust Issues.
I noticed this morning as I was going through my Twitter feed that I am much more inclined to follow certain short domain names over others (regardless of the content supporting the link or the person who tweeted it).
Example. Today I ran across a j.mp short domain and just passed it by, but clicked nearly all the bit.ly URLs. For some reason, I just figured nothing behind a j.mp URL could be something I cared about seeing.
The odd part is that it turns out j.mp is a bit.ly-powered service, which led me to think about why I trust one short domain more than another (especially when both are effectively hiding where I’m headed).
- Is it because it doesn’t appear to be more than a random string of three characters?
- Is it because I’ve never seen it before?
Not sure I’ve figured it out, just food for thought.
